Since this is in the same form factor as the NodeMCU v1.0 board, but with an ARM micro, it could be a way more accessible option that the somewhat exotic and uncommon Xtensa based esp8266. Tons of existing ARM code could go right on it, and it could be an mbed platform in an of itself.
It does not matter if it is funded or not. It was just a promotional campaign anyway. It was available before the campaign and you can buy it now, search for WiFiMCU on Alliexpress.
